Sri Lanka – Update on disruption to mail operations owing to COVID-19

29 aprile, 2020

The designated operator of Sri Lanka, the Department of Posts, asks us to inform other Union member countries and their designated operators that all international passenger flights to Colombo remain suspended and the 24-hour curfew and “work from home” period declared in four main districts including Colombo has been extended until 4 May 2020. The restrictions may be further extended if the situation in these areas worsens.

A further 18 districts of the island are also under curfew for nine hours per day, with the Department of Posts operating with a limited workforce, mainly supporting government relief activities but also providing limited postal facilities.

The force majeure situation therefore continues. Processing and delivery of any international inbound mail will be subject to considerable delays as the Department of Posts is not in a position to comply with delivery standards. Acceptance of outbound airmail/sea mail (letter post, parcel post and EMS) is also temporarily suspended until sufficient transport and workforce capacity becomes available.

The Department of Posts thanks all Union member countries and their designated operators for their understanding
